Bartlett Pear and Johnigold. 101811

On the 13th, Swezey meant to bring us some pears from his orchard, but he discovered too late that they weren’t ripe enough yet, so they spent the weekend in the ethylene chamber. I guess he didn’t have a ton of pears, so he paired them (no pun intended!) with some Johnigolds, also from his orchard. In class it was nice to have a slice, as always, but I brought one home, too. Oh my goodness. You don’t even know. That was the most delicious pear I had ever eaten. Normally I only like crisp pears, and this being a soft pear, I wasn’t all that enthused, but hooooly poopsicles. That thing was delicious. It had just the right sweetness, pressure, juiciness. It was amazing. It looked a little funny ‘cause it was smallish, which is probably just part of the organic factor, but ooooohhh my gosh. If Bartlett pears were always like that, I’d eat them all the time, man. Anyways, we got our reflective essays back. Full points/extra points as usual! I love this class.

Fuji and Granny. 101111

Yesterday for our morning wake-up call, Swezey brought us some Fuji’s and Granny’s so we could compare the tastes. I’ve never had such a small Fuji, but it was so sweet and tasty! The Granny wasn’t as tart as I’d expected, and I still liked it. I guess some people do prefer tart to sweet and vice versa…I dunno, I kinda just like both. Since they were so small, they were a little starchy, but delicious nonetheless. He didn’t bring very many, so I didn’t get to take one home, and I don’t have a picture, either. I actually stayed up the whole time, too! So proud!

Granny Smith and Cox’s Orange Pippin. 100611

Yesterday in core we had two different varieties of apples: Granny Smith and Cox’s Orange Pippin. The Granny was bright green and very tart compared to the Cox. The Cox was light yellow with a green tint and orange-red speckles. Both were much starchier than the previous apples. The Cox tasted like a Fuji, but the starchiness was a little off-putting and dried out my mouth. Nonetheless, I enjoyed them as a morning snack and they helped me stay awake for our Grapes of Wrath quick-write/quiz. Good thing I’m a beast at BS ‘cause I didn’t really read the section we were supposed to and we had to use three different quotes for each..

Gala part two. 100411

Today when I got to core we sat around talking about Swezey’s new puppy. He still has a ton of Gala’s so we had those for our wake up call again today. Unfortunately, I went to bed too late last night, watching stupid videos with onamagiccarpetride, so I ended up nodding off while Swezey explained our homework. We, apparently, watched a documentary about Rachel Carson….yeah, I slept through almost all of what we watched. Which kinda sucks because I like Rachel Carson a lot. But anyways, I took home a Gala and finally took a picture of it. I’ll upload it later and put it in the applelog. I got my plenary work back and Dana was awesome and gave me some nice comments! Looks like last-minute work is also top-notch work…as usual, muwahaha.

Johnigold. 092911

Today, Swezey realized that he should be giving us apples at the beginning of class, so they can energize us before we start dozing off. Our variety today was the Johnigold, which was very sweet and tasty, as well as larger than the mac’s and the galas. Apparently the Johnigold is a popular central coast-based variety. It’s a mix between a Johnathan apple and a Golden Delicious. I’m glad we’re probably going to eat it more than once! After sampling the apples, we watched a documentary about the Hetch Hetchy Dam and talked about a new integrative essay. I’m going to write about the Three Gorges Dam since it’s relatable to the sources we need to use and I already know a lot about it. I realized I should’ve been taking pictures…maybe next time. I took one home and dropped it off to witofbritt before I headed to the McHenry Library.

Gala. 092711

During today’s break, Swezey gave us some delicious Gala apples. They were sweet and not as tart or acidic as the Mac’s. They were a perfect snack size and I took one home as I think I will continue doing for the rest of this quarter. We also listened to The Grapes of Wrath on tape. It’s pretty funny to listen to the voice actor change tones and mannerisms for each character. I love this class.

Macintosh. 092211

We had Macintosh apples today after core. They kinda taste like Fuji’s and they were the perfect snack size! I had no idea what to expect coming into this class, except for a few words of advice from a former student. Swezey is way cooler than I expected. When I got to class he actually looked kinda scary to me. But then I realized he’s pretty dang swell and we get to write better essays than the other College Eight core classes.
